Yesterday, Microsoft surprised 360 owners when they announced and released the original Doom on to the Xbox Live Marketplace. But as usual, it was not released without some upgrades.
The Xbox Live Arcade download consists of the entire single player campaign (four episodes), four-player co-op and Deathmatch (both either on Xbox Live or via Splitscreen), and as with all arcade downloads, the game has the usual achievements, matchmaking, and leaderboards. Doom also supports 1080i and 5.1 surround sound along with some minor graphical upgrades to smooth things out. Doom is available right now as an arcade download for 800 Microsoft Points (equivalent to $10). It is 22 MB in size. Look for more information on the game when we get the section added to the site.
The folks over at Doom Wad Station recently got the chance to have an interview with Daniel Gimmer, aka Tormentor667, who is currently producing a project that will be released for Doom 3 within the next year.
This old school map creator shares some of his origins, such as the following: Sematary: Did you have any mentors [..]?` Tormentor: I'm not a master of scripting so I was kinda dependant to the ZDoom.org community, a place filled with kind and cooperative people that always helped me in things conerning ACS but everything that has something to do with environment and mapping was my own effort. Everything learning by doing, I teached myself from the very beginning when I first opened DETH, my first doom map editor! :) Sure, there arose questions sometimes and I am glad that there were persons like Enjay, Graf Zahl and other people who are the real base of the ZDoom community, but I learned most of the stuff I am aware of now by myself, and that makes me proud a bit ;) To check out some of the work done by Tormentor, check out his webpage below. A few days ago, Xbox Spokesperson Steven Moore was on the podcast of Major Nelson, where he said Doom 3 (and perhaps also it's expansion, Ressurection of Evil) has been announced as one of the additional 20-plus, originally 12, games that will be backwards compatible for the Xbox 360. Coming with it is also the popular Lego Star Wars.
While this addition is definitely worth it, Microsoft has continued to stay quiet on any further games that they may have planned to add to the ever growing list of games which can now be transferred from the Xbox to the Xbox 360.

IGN FilmForce have a two page review of Doom up, where they gave it a three out of five. Read the review here
Everyone else, consider this: Doom is made to resemble and glorify a videogame. It has some tight action sequences and some righteous kills, and it succeeds in the things it sets out to do. However, these things do not include weaving a delicate tale of human interaction or composing a story that makes a lot of sense. If you can live with that, it's a hell of a ride. If you can't, just wait Oscar season is almost upon us. They also have four new video clips up. Three of them are interviews but the fourth one contains some good movie footage. Watch them here. PLATFORMSDoom [XBOX360, PSX, GBA, SATURN, Mac, Movie]Xbox Fans can rejoice as Resurrection of Evil comes to the console. The story picks up where the original leaves off 2 years later at the site of the first battle with Bertrugar. A new artifact is discovered that turns the new UAC star into the target for Bertrugar and his demons as they attempt to track it down and re-attain it. Multiplayer support this time comes with new maps with support for up to 4 players across Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Last Man Standing and Tournament mode via System Link or Xbox Live. Bonus features on this edition are Doom II and the master levels for Doom II which have been optimized for the Xbox. They include standard single player and 2-4 player co-op or deathmatch. Players can link up or split the screen for the experience. The guys over at Quake.de have posted up a nifty little program that can be used to convert the maps from Quake 3 Arena to maps that can be used in DOOM 3. The convertor automatically extracts and converts textures needed by the map, copies the material list to the right place, and extracts and converts models and its textures as well. As perfect as it sounds, it does have a few flaws though such as texture scaling, shifting and rotating and there are no shaders. Wanna give it a try? Head on over to quake.de and snatch it up.
There is now a program available at Quake.de which converts the maps in Quake 3 Arena to maps for DOOM 3. The program does everything automatically, but do not expect it to be flawless. There are texture scaling problems as well as no shaders in the maps. It might be worth it if you really liked the maps from Quake 3. Download it here.

FiringSquad have got a benchmark test on mainstream cards.
While the performance with these cards isnt as high as the others, testing them is a little easier, as we feel that for most of these cards DOOM 3s medium quality mode provides the most ideal combination of visual quality to performance -- dropping down to DOOM 3s low quality mode yields a negligible performance increase for the most part.

id Software lead programmer John Carmack did not attend due to the birth of his first child yesterday. id surprised the huge crowd with an over hour long film with Carmack just speaking about Doom 3 tech issues and other topics. As with Carmack's previous QuakeCon talks, here are the highlights along with comments from other id employees from after the Carmack speech:
Cammack said that id Software's next game will continue the Doom 3 theme of a mostly single player experience with only a mimimal multiplayer experience. Carmack feels creating a new graphics renderer can be better appreicated via a slower single player game with partner companies going in to make more robust multiplayer game experienced later through expansion packs and sequel. Carmack has been working on the new rendering engine for the next id game for a couple of months and he hopes that by the end of the year it will be up to running actual tech demos with artwork. Carmack and id declined to show what they have been working on for the next engine and game at QuakeCon for this year, but Carmack expects to show off the new rendering tech and a bit of the new game at next year's QuakeCon. With multiple graphics cards close to release in single PCs, Carmack expects that in a few years, the costs of making these PC will allow TV and even film studios to abandon the typical GGI render farm way of making film graphics and switching to the most cost effective and time effective real time graphcs rendering, perhaps with using game graphics tech as its base. In the Q&A session, id CEO Todd Hollenshead said that the Doom movie script, while not final, is a "killer script" and that Universal is now working on pre-production and casting. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has expressed interest in playing in the Doom movie but if he is indeed cast he may not play the "Doom guy" but rather the Sarge character. id programmer Robert Duffy said he has gotten "5,000 emails" from folks wanting id to support widescreen modes for Doom 3. Duffy says he plans to take a look at this issue but onlt said, "Maybe" if widescreen mode will be put in.

Hey all, I thought you might want to know how to solve the problem of Doom 3 crashing and having to hard boot. This is very simple to fix. All you have to do is make sure your windows screen resolution matches the in game resolution and your set. With it set this way im playing ultra resolution with almost no crashing. I did have one crash after about five hours of play. I think this was only caused by overheat though. I know how frustrating this problem is and I really hope this helps. Most likely a patch will be released to fix this problem so if this does not work for you, you may have to wait.
Enjoy Doom 3 for the first time uninterupted. Now, I haven't gotten a chance to confirm if this works, but I will keep updating if there is any news on this.

DOOM 3 support in Gtk Radiant for mapping and level editing. Even with DOOM 3 built in editor, some fans still prefer Gtk Radiant.
"Doom 3 comes with a builtin level editor nicknamed D3Radiant, which can be started by typing editor at the console ( in window mode ), or by passing +editor on the command line. Doom 3 support in GtkRadiant is fairly likely to happen, as it is the shortest path to bring editing capability to the Linux and Mac versions. Remember that we are always looking for new contributors for GtkRadiant :-) Radiant has started putting together some Doom 3 editing information in the wiki. That should help everyone get started. "

Well, there are already three small mods up on Fileplanet.
A few sites have begun to put up the first reviews of the game. Gamers-Depot, CounterFrag.com, Computergames.ro, Gamer's Hell, and Telefragged have posted their reviews of the game so far. Of all of them, Gamers-Depot, Computergames.ro, and Telefragged have the more lengthy, in depth reviews with images and such. All of the reviews were very postive, but head over to each one now to check out the details and the exact ratings they gave the game.

One of the biggest issues for players right now is the OpenGL support by ATI, recently it was reported that a revision to the OpenGL driver would be in the works and it seems to have come true as Guru3D.com has the latest ATI Catalyst 4.9 Beta available for download at this very moment. From what they state they don't even know how much the performance increases, they just know that this is supposed to help out ATI owners quite a bit. Chances are they'll need more mirrors than this as users hammer the server later today. Keep in mind this is a beta release which means there will be no official support from ATI if anything goes haywire. On the other hand you can always show up in the forums and ask away for advice if things do happen to go bad.
Something that caught my eye reading Robert Duffy's .plan file update last week was the talk about normal compression. One of the big features of ATI's X800 series is 3Dc and the results could be classified as stunning as there is a huge difference with larger normal maps. A quick follow up was fired off to both Robert Duffy and ATI's Dave Nalasco - 3Dc is not supported in DOOM 3 although Robert Duffy noted that "[the] 3Dc stuff looks really good." Both parties noted that id prefered a single rendering path for all cards and the lack of wide hardware support was the sticking point. As an interesting addendum, the normal compression technique used in DOOM 3 is a by product of ATI research - this is the DXTC compatible technique that ATI described that would be used on non-3Dc cards. Kind of cool to see hardware companies SHARE information.
I've always found it ironic that the legit, big media outlets can sometimes be sitting on the sidelines while leaked copies of games are being played by all sorts of other people. In this case, D3 is the most ironic example of all: HardOCP seems to have their hands on it, but IGN is still waiting? We don't have a copy but we're hardly IGN afterall.
The situation became frenetic as some gamers reported that certain retailers were selling the game as early as this past Friday, a full five days before the official ship date. Since then, those retailers have apparently halted sales until August 3. Still, others report that a different retail chain will be fulfilling pre-orders at 7 PM tonight. At the same time, other locations of this retailer stubbornly maintain the game will not be sold until start of business tomorrow. Other retailers have not received the game yet, while a few honestly have never heard of "DOOM 3" at all.Its no joke when 50,000 people are apparently downloading the leaked copy, when IGN can't even find a single copy with which to do their review! Earlier today, after driving to every store we could think of within a 10 mile radius, we even caught ourselves thinking of stopping by Burger King to see if they have DOOM 3. It's a desperation kind of thing.Check out IGN's frustration here.
Introduction
id Software's DOOM 3 is poised to be one of the most played titles in the history of 3D gaming. Anticipation has grown to monumental levels as hundreds of thousands of people worldwide wait to experience the phenomenon called DOOM 3. Along with the anticipation, many are experiencing apprehension over the level of gameplay they expect from their current hardware. Still others, using this occasion to mull over an upgrade, have been waiting to discover which of their many hardware choices will provide them with the best DOOM 3 experience. At the moment, DOOM 3 will be the closest many of us will ever come to playing the leading man in a big Hollywood movie production. While there will continue to be many more action games in the near future, many of which will provide an enhanced level of realism, DOOM 3 will be the first and likely one of the best you will see. We've played it and we're here to tell you that even if computer gaming is not "your thing," you will want to play DOOM 3, and we have a feeling many people will see it that way. The interactive entertainment experience of DOOM 3 is going to be far reaching and will certainly break the bounds in appealing to those people outside what is considered the average gamer. With the prospect of so many new people being brought into gaming by DOOM 3, there will likely be a lot of questions regarding the computer hardware needed to support it. Our Goals id Software and HardOCP have teamed up to help answer your hardware questions. We're publishing this guide before DOOM 3 goes for sale, so you will know beforehand what to expect in terms of gameplay immersion by your current hardware. We also want to help maximize the overall DOOM 3 experience for those of you that have been waiting for the opportunuity to upgrade. This guide is not an attempt to crown a king in the realm of hardware, and no direct comparisons are going to be drawn on any of our graphs. Our goal here is to help you understand where your system is positioned in terms of playing DOOM 3 and to help you choose an upgrade that will make a real difference and offer you the greatest improvement in gameplay for the money spent. In the world of gaming, id Software has been credited with many firsts, and they are about to achieve one more. id wanted the minimum required computer specifications for DOOM 3, or the min spec system requirements, to reflect a system that can actually provide what the game has to offer. Many times we've seen min spec systems not come close to providing a good gaming experience, but that will not be the case with DOOM 3. The min spec system outlined on the DOOM 3 packaging is very playable, and we will prove that to you in our guide. This alone should let many of you know whether or not you have a DOOM 3 capable system. The fact is that id Software has done a tremendous job in optimizing DOOM 3 for computers that are two years old or older. If you have a 1.5GHz Pentium and a 3D card that has been made in the last couple of years, you should be able to enjoy the DOOM 3 experience as it was meant to be. |
