Even though the original Doom is now 12 years old, it still has one of the biggest followings around today. As the forefather of the FPS genre this should be no surprise, but there are some things that may have escaped the casual gamer. People who've played this game to death have, between them all, uncovered some pretty interesting facts.

Holding shift down when running makes you run faster, everyone knows that. But did you know if you run forwards and strafe left/right at the same time (run diagonally basically) you actually run faster than a straight run?

The game calculates your air speed incorrectly, this is why it may seem like you're running down stairs really quickly, it's because you are. You actually move faster in the air than on the ground. So if you combine this with the above trick, some jumps that are otherwise impossible actually become possible and can lead to shortcuts in levels.

Explosions are infinitely tall. No units can be directly underneath any other ones, this is why when you're trying to run by high flying demons you sometimes get stuck. So Doom is really 2 and a half D. You can make use of this by firing rockets at a wall and actually damaging units way above or below. It also means you don't have to be on the same level as a switch to activate it, if you can go underneath/above it then you'll more often than not be able to activate the switch.

Speedrunning has been a Doom tradition for a long time. This basically entails completing levels as fast as you can. Drew "Styx" DeVile has some of the most impressive videos in existence, beating Doom 2 on Nightmare mode in under half an hour, also beating Doom 2 on Nightmare mode with 100% secrets in all levels (bar 1 or 2 which is allowed) in under an hour.
