"Doom" is a first-person shooter (FPS) video game released by id Software in 1993. It was originally released on MS-DOS and installed on 3.5 inch floppy discs commercially. A shareware version of the game was released on BBC internet boards for free download (with the exception that it only contained the first episode of the game).

"Doom" at the time was a technical marvel. Highly detailed graphics, stunning sound, multiplayer FPS gaming and even endless user-customization via the developer-provided level and texture editor made it a massive hit. While it wasn't the first game in the genre, it was the most famous, as Bill Gates once said that there were more copies of the shareware version of Doom installed on computers worldwide at the time than Microsoft's Windows Operating System. The game's success created an artificial need for similar games, and for almost 10 years, the phrase "Doom clone" became a part of the gaming lexicon to denote rip-off games using a similar formula.

"Doom" was so successful in fact, that it spawned multiple sequels and is still is one of the most recognized names in the business. It is continually voted one of the most successful and innovative FPS games of all time.
